Garda and Police Vetting

The HR Office is responsible for the administration of Garda Vetting for staff and students of Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).

Garda Vetting is the process of checking a person’s background to see if there are any issues which would make them unsuitable to work or volunteer in an environment with children and/or vulnerable adults.

The person being vetted (the applicant) gives written authorisation for An Garda Síochána to disclose to DkIT details of all prosecutions, successful or not, pending or completed recorded in the State at the time of application.

For Students

Garda / Police Vetting is a pre-requisite for certain courses of study at DkIT. To ensure the protection of the public and to justify public trust and confidence, DkIT is committed to ensuring that only suitable students are allowed to undertake work placements which involve contact with children or vulnerable adults.

In these cases the students must adhere fully to the Garda Vetting process and approval from DkIT.

For Staff at DkIT

All employees will be Garda Vetted to enable them to work in the Institute.

When a prospective employee is vetted by the Gardaí the details of all convictions and prosecutions are disclosed to the authorised liaison person in the registered organisation. The details will include all completed prosecutions whether or not they were successful and will also include any pending prosecutions.

The Dundalk Institute of Technology Policy on Garda Vetting aims to fulfil the Institute’s commitment to its community and meet its legal requirements under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 to 2016 (the Act). The Act provides a statutory basis for the vetting of persons carrying out relevant work with children or vulnerable persons. This policy is designed to inform staff employed by the Institute and any potential job applicants the responsibilities of Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT / the Institute) with regard to Garda Vetting, the application process and the criteria by which an application is considered.
