We offer programmes in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Design Engineering and in Renewable Energy systems (post graduate only).
Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical & Electronic Systems
Electronic and Electrical Engineers design and create the enabling technologies that allow us to monitor, manage and control energy supplies. They also design and produce the information and data processing technology we need, the communication systems and smart technologies that are behind the remote management of wind and solar energy among other things.
This is a “hands-on” practical degree in electronic engineering with specialist options in Design, Renewable Energy, and Electrical Engineering.
Electronics is about the design and workings of computers, mobile phones, robots, amplifiers, televisions, car engine controllers, factory production controllers and much more.
Whether you have done science at secondary school or not is irrelevant – we start from scratch.
The modules taught for the first 18 months are common among all students followed by 2 to 3 months of industrial placement in Ireland or abroad. In year 3 you choose your specialist option from either Design, Electrical Services Design or Renewable Energy.
Our teaching philosophy is: “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” From day one, you will be using both your hands and your head.
This is a programme to ensure that all students quickly feel part of a learning community, see the benefits of shared aims and are motivated to achieve those aims through teamwork.
The most important subject every year is “Engineering Practice”. This is where you design and build real products - anything from a remote controlled robot to your own computer or sound system. You will do a considerable amount of computer programming as the distinction between software and hardware is becoming more blurred. Other core subject areas are:
- Electrical circuits
- Embedded Systems
- Engineering Maths and Science
Depending on your preference, you select - after year 2 - either Renewable Energy, Electrical Services, or Electronic Design.
Six Leaving Certificate subjects, including English or Irish with at least grade C3 in one Higher Level paper, together with at least grade D3 in five Ordinary Level papers,
at least grade D3 in six Ordinary Level papers and at least 200 points.
A minimum grade of C3 in Mathematics (Ordinary Level) is also required. Holders of National Craft Certificates can avail of advanced entry.

Follow On Programmes:
This programme provides the foundation for transfer routes to honours degree programmes in other Institutes of Technology and Universities in Ireland and abroad.
Note: Students who have successfully completed the first two years of this programme and who wish to leave after two years, may be awarded a Level 6 Higher Certificate in Engineering.
Recognition by Professional Bodies:
Graduates are eligible for Engineer's Ireland Associate Member grade.
